The general manager of Hilton Bali Resort shares his passion for the hospitality industry
Amit Sakhrani shares with epicure about his enduring passion for hospitality that led him to his position as the general manager of Hilton Bali Resort.
Being in the exclusive area of Bali has become both a privilege and a motivation for hotels and resorts in Nusa Dua to consistently deliver the ultimate hospitality experience that leaves lasting memories for its guests. Hilton Bali Resort is no exception. True to its name, the resort has been one of the benchmarks of tropical luxury in Bali, offering world-class facilities, amenities, and services that are family-friendly and versatile.
Whether romantic pursuits or family outings, guests are ensured to have a cherished memory during their stay. The staff are committed to delivering a delicate and sensitive service, exceeding expectations of mere hospitality. This work ethos is the fruit of the passionate leader, Amit Sakhrani, as the resort’s general manager. Through an exclusive interview with epicure, the fervent hotelier from Goa, India, shared his insights on navigating leadership and the industry.
You have shown an interest in the hospitality industry from a young age. Could you share how you nurtured this passion and ultimately pursued it as your lifework?
Creating memorable experiences has always intrigued me. My early memories are from my family vacations, where I found joy in the meticulous details of hospitality. As I grew older, I actively sought opportunities to immerse myself in the industry, working part-time in various roles.
These experiences solidified my passion, and I realised that bringing joy and comfort to others through hospitality was my calling. This realisation guided my decision to pursue a formal education and eventually dedicate my career to the field.
With over two decades of experience, what significant changes in the industry have you observed that have had a notable impact on your career?
Over the years, the industry has witnessed a paradigm shift towards technology integration, with online bookings, personalised services, and data analytics playing a pivotal role. Additionally, there is a growing emphasis on our responsibility for our environment, and this has shaped my approach towards “sustainability” and “Travel with Purpose” at our resort.
The evolution of customer preferences, driven by social media and globalisation, has also been a key factor influencing our strategies. In the near future, I foresee an increased use and integration of AI in the industry.
Why do you consider finding team members with the appropriate aptitude and attitude the most important factor, and how does it align with your leadership style?
The success of any hospitality venture hinges on the people behind it. I firmly believe that skills can be honed, but a positive attitude and a genuine passion for service are innate qualities.
In my leadership, I prioritise creating a culture of collaboration and empowerment. A team with the right attitude not only adapts to challenges but also contributes to a positive work environment, enhancing the overall guest experience.
As you have worked in Medan, Jakarta, and Bali, each with distinct cultural nuances, how did you navigate these cultural diversities?
Embracing and respecting diverse cultures is at the core of my approach. I invest time in understanding local customs, traditions, and preferences. Building relationships with the local team members and the community helps bridge cultural gaps. An old passion for motorcycle riding allows me to steer off the beaten path and experience the authentic culture in every region.
This cultural sensitivity is reflected in our services, ensuring that our guests feel a genuine connection with the destination while maintaining the high standards expected from our brand.
What do you find most enjoyable and fulfilling working at Hilton Bali Resort?
The most enjoyable aspect is witnessing the transformation of a guest’s stay into a cherished memory. Hilton Bali Resort’s commitment to excellence and innovation encourages creativity, and every team member is motivated to exceed expectations.
What are the essential experiences guests should not miss when staying at the Hilton Bali Resort?
Hilton Bali Resort offers diverse experiences, from four inter-connecting pools, a curated culinary journey, cultural immersion, signature spa treatments, yoga by the beach, to all-day activities for adults and Kids Club for little guests, and immeasurably more.
We also have two ballrooms where guests can hold conferences or meetings, a chapel for an intimate wedding, and a garden that fits a considerable number of receptions. Additionally, the breathtaking views from our resort and the personalised service provided by our attentive staff contribute to an unforgettable stay.
As someone who loves to seek authentic and unique delicacies, what culinary delights would you suggest our readers try while visiting the island?
Bali is a culinary paradise with a rich tapestry of flavours. I recommend trying the local favourite, Ayam Betutu, a Balinese spiced chicken dish. Nasi Goreng, a flavorful fried rice, and Rendang, a slow-cooked beef delicacy, are must-tries. Exploring local markets for tropical fruits and traditional desserts is also an excellent way to savour the authentic tastes of the island.
What are the next F&B plans for the resort in the near future?
We are thrilled to unveil our upcoming plans for the resort, focusing on enhancing the guest experience through our innovative day club and lounge. This unique blend of exquisite dining options, refreshing beverages, and vibrant entertainment will create a dynamic and immersive atmosphere. Stay tuned for exciting developments as we embark on this elevated culinary journey at the resort.
