Waterbom Bali is on track to achieve net zero emissions by 2033 through a series of wise and sustainable choices.

With rising temperatures and other global climate challenges, initiating environmentally conscious efforts is now more vital than ever. As stipulated in the Paris Agreement, global citizens are expected to do their utmost to support achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Industries, too, are encouraged to take a reflective and progressive approach to reducing their carbon footprints.

As a leading figure in Asia’s tourism industry, Waterbom Bali has set an ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2033, aiming to inspire others to follow suit. Through a comprehensive approach to waste management, water and energy conservation, and buoyed by the success of last year’s initiatives, the waterpark believes the goal is achievable.

A greener shift at Waterbom Bali

Since 2016, the waterpark has shown a profound commitment towards sustainability through its programme, Karmic Returns. Adherence to the Balinese philosophy, Tri Hita Karana, resonates with the waterpark’s initiatives, as the principle values harmonious coexistence between people, nature, and the divine. The waterpark’s determination and alignment with local wisdom translate into a solid commitment to environmental responsibility, recognised by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) 2023 Grand Award in Sustainability and Social Responsibility.

Acquiring SBTi’s recognition and becoming the only SBTi-approved tourism company in the country is no mean feat. Waterbom Bali’s progressive measures, such as its low-carbon programmes, which allowed the waterpark to achieve a 93.3% recycling rate and reduce landfill waste to just 6.7% in 2023, have contributed to the admirable status.

The waterpark also implements an Environmentally Sustainable Design Plan for its new Oasis Gardens. The plan applies an ethical and sustainable approach to the construction process, from design elements to material sourcing. The greener transition extends to its staff transportation, where 14% of the fleet utilises electric vehicles.

The future is bright

Waterbom Bali will continue its efforts to achieve net zero by 2033 and commits to reducing 90% of the company’s emissions. Responsible changes are employed to minimise the waterpark’s environmental impact, such as water pump efficiency upgrades, energy-saving water heaters, electric kitchen appliances, sustainable consumables, on-site renewable energy, and verified carbon offsetting.

This year, the waterpark is working on its edutainment programmes, in which visitors can actively participate in sustainability initiatives through engaging activities such as workshops and discussions. Among them is the Seed of Thought, a fun workshop to empower and educate youth about sustainable practices.
