Mooncake with Meaning: Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok and Artstory by Autistic Thai Collaboration

The Mid-Autumn Festival, often endearingly called the Mooncake Festival, draws near once again. It is a season where families and friends gather under the fullmoon’s glow, sharing mooncakes as tokens of unity and good fortune. This year in Bangkok, the search for the perfect mooncake comes with a deeper meaning. Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok has joined hands with Artstory by Autistic Thai to create a Signature Mooncake Box that is as meaningful as it is beautiful, with part of the proceeds dedicated to supporting the Autistic Thai Foundation.

Five signature flavours to pick for your Mid-Autumn Festival gift

The Year of the Snake Signature Mooncake Box has already made its debut with an early-bird pre-order in August, and is now available for purchase. Priced at THB 1,888 per box, it comes with four selections from five exquisite flavours, each crafted with its own distinct character: Durian with Melon Seed & Salted Egg Yolk, Custard, Matcha Macadamia, Nutty Sesame Crunch, and the savoury Chicken Floss Taro. More than just festive treats, these mooncakes are created to reflect the signature flavours of the hotel.

Encasing these delights is a box that tells a story through art. Artstory’s Sireetorn ‘Bambam’ Puriprecha paints the background in vivid shades that celebrate beauty in imperfection, while Rapeepat ‘Pi’ Athiwattananont brings the snake to life in bright, twisting hues that symbolise the gift of happiness. Together, the two artists created ‘Rhythm of Destiny,’ an elegant and dynamic piece that embodies the Year of the Snake’s qualities: calmness, charisma, intuition, and the quiet determination to shape one’s own path.

Beyond its showstopping design, the mooncake box is crafted with purpose as well as beauty. Lift the sliding lid, and the four mooncakes are revealed, secured neatly in place until the moment of gifting. Once enjoyed, the box transforms into a fully functional wooden domino set, marrying form, function, and storytelling in one. Beneath the mooncakes lies a game board adorned with original artwork, while a complete set of 28 custom domino tiles rests at the base – a thoughtful surprise that extends the joy of the Mid-Autumn celebration well beyond the season.

The box holds four distinctive flavours, wrapped in a design that balances form and function

The Signature Mooncake Box by Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok continues its mission of spreading happiness to both its patrons and collaborators. Last year’s initiative raised more than THB 90,000 in support of Artstory by Autistic Thai, a foundation established in 2018 to nurture and develop the skills of autistic adults and children across Thailand. Through its programmes, the foundation empowers them to channel their feelings into artistic creations and meaningful products, turning creativity into both expression and opportunity.
