Cathay restaurant pulls down its shutters
The Cathay Restaurant, previously housed on the second floor of The Cathay building in Handy Road, has ceased operations since 15 June.
While it has been suffering from poor business climate for years now, it was considered one of the best restaurants back in its glory days, with a bar serving Western cocktails, a dancefloor, and a resident band. Fun fact: The Cathay was an European restaurant when it opened in 1940, but renovated and reopened as a Chinese restaurant only in 1951. The Cathay was also a training ground for some of the local whizzes of Cantonese cuisine, who were tutored under revered chef Luo Chen. These same chefs later went on to open stalwarts of their own, including Dragon Phoenix, Red Star and Roland restaurant.
