, Daniel Tay revives the Seng Choong name

Seng Choong was a household name for anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s. The confectionery ran for over 30 years in Marine Parade before it closed in 1996. Today, Bakerzin founder and ex-pastry chef of Les Amis, Daniel Tay, has revived the name of his father’s old bakery in the form of an e-commerce site, Old Seng Choong. It currently retails a full, traditional Chinese New Year lineup that includes pineapple tarts, red date and yam cakes. The carrot cake ($23.80/500g) is a savoury standout, studded with plenty of dried shrimp and lup cheong. Pan-fry thick squares for a crispy layer that gives way to a custardy mix of cubed white radish and premium rice flour. Top with fried shallots and XO sauce for ultimate oomph.
