Save The Coral Reef with Sudamala Reef Revival Initiative

In the azure-fringed waters of Labuan Bajo, the Sudamala Reef Revival initiative serves as a sophisticated, hospitality-led blueprint for the protection of the local coral reef. This ambitious expansion, led by Sudamala Resorts through Sudamala Resort, Seraya in collaboration with Yayasan Sudamala Bumi Insani (YSBI) and Bali Blue Harmony, targets the regeneration of the fragile marine ecosystems surrounding Seraya Kecil Island. By integrating guest participation into its core, Sudamala transforms a standard tropical getaway into a meaningful contribution towards the restoration of the surrounding coral reef.

Utilising the internationally recognised MARS Reef Star system, the programme employs steel-modular structures to stabilise damaged areas and encourage new growth. The Regent of Manggarai Barat noted the importance of this synergy, stating, “This is a commendable example of how tourism and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. We fully support this initiative and hope it will inspire other tourism stakeholders to take similar action for our precious marine ecosystems.”

Ecological survey has been conducted across 6.31-hectare designated zone for an optimal conservation effort. As government permitting progresses, the phased underwater deployment will adhere to strict sustainability and environmental best practices.

The coral reef conservation effort utilises internationally recognised MARS Reef Star system

The initiative allows every guest staying across Sudamala Resorts portfolio to partner with Sudamala in the long-term preservation of a thriving coral reef in Flores, whether they are staying in Bali, Lombok, or Flores. Pariama Hutasoit of Blue Harmony Bali added, “This collaboration demonstrates how hospitality and nonprofit sectors can work together in a structured and measurable way to restore coral reefs. We hope this model can be replicated across Indonesia.”

For the environmentally conscious traveller, stewardship is made seamless through three distinct contribution tiers: a USD 5 coral sand filling, a USD 15 coral seedling, or a USD 150 Reef Star structure which supports 15 individual fragments. The contributions support materials, installation, and monitoring within the conservation zone. Guests who participate in coral seedlings or Reef Star structures will be awarded a personalised digital certificate.
