Solar Shift: Sudamala Resort, Seraya Powers Ahead with Solar Energy System

A stronger commitment to a greener future is taking shape in East Nusa Tenggara, particularly on Seraya Kecil Island, where Sudamala Resort, Seraya has unveiled an integrated solar energy system to power its operations. By installing 480 solar panels across the resort grounds, the property is reducing its reliance on fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy, in line with both regional and national sustainability visions.

The system, with a 300 kWp capacity and supported by a 770 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), enables the resort to store solar energy for use after sundown. It is expected to generate around 410,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 370,000kg annually – equivalent to planting over 4,900 trees.

This initiative complements Labuan Bajo’s growing profile as a green premium destination, where sustainability and natural beauty sit side by side. More importantly, it reinforces East Nusa Tenggara’s ambition to position itself as Indonesia’s renewable energy hub.

“Sudamala Resort, Seraya stands as a strong testament that environmental stewardship can go hand in hand with business sustainability and regional development. As Labuan Bajo grows into a world-class tourism destination, initiatives like this ensure that our progress remains sustainable, responsible, and future-oriented. This is also part of our broader vision for Nusa Tenggara Timur to become Indonesia’s renewable energy hub,” stated Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena.

The integrated solar system now powers up to 85 percent of the resort’s operations with renewable energy, allowing eco-conscious travellers to play their part in driving sustainable tourism forward simply by staying at Sudamala Resort, Seraya.

“This transition reflects our commitment not just to sustainability but also to align with our environmentally conscious guests,” explained Ben Subrata, CEO of Sudamala Resorts. “We hope this will inspire other hospitality operators, especially those in remote island locations, to embrace renewable energy.”

The resort is able to step forward to a greener future through this development thanks to partnerships with Xurya, a solar energy provider, and Suryagen, an energy storage and solar solutions specialist.

This multi-party collaboration is believed to be the key to reaching new heights in sustainability, as stated by Vice Regent of Manggarai Barat, Dr. Yulianus Weng, M., “From solar along the coasts, geothermal, to wind across the islands, our province is blessed with abundant clean energy resources. What we need is not only investment and technology, but also a spirit of collaboration between government, private sector, and the community.”

By completing this project, Sudamala Resort, Seraya sets a benchmark for integrating renewable energy from solar energy system into remote hospitality, paving the way for future green initiatives across Labuan Bajo and beyond.
