SWOONING AT OON’S
She’s been a local culinary stalwart for decades, but Violet Oon is constantly finding ways to bring something fresh to the table. Take the newly launched weekend brunch at her restaurant Violet Oon’s Kitchen for example, where nostalgic fare and Peranakan offerings are shaken up in deliciously imaginative ways. Her French Toast with Gula Melaka Banana Sauce features thick slices of brioche slathered with banana pengat, coconut milk and generous streaks of palm sugar, while the Asian Big Breakfast is a sumptuous medley of nasi kunyit, fried chicken wings, sambal egg and otah. In a span of one year, she’s added 12 more dishes to the menu, including Buah Keluak Pasta, with a generous mound of prawn and sambal infused buah keluak tossed in spaghetti; and the immensely popular weekly specials of Dry Laksa and Chilli Crab Pizza.
