It’s Stinky business: New location and desserts for durian retailer 99 Old Trees

Durian lovers, it’s time to pay homage to the King of Fruits with quality durians, desserts, ice cream and more. All these, along with newly launched durian desserts, are now all available under 99 Old Trees and its sister brand Stinky.

99 Old Trees has been offering durians online since late 2017 at its brick-and-mortar shop in the Balestier area since June 2018. The brand has long established itself as a trusted retailer of quality durians and prides itself in offering only fresh  durians which are delivered daily from Malaysia, mainly from the 33-year old Fook Gor Durian Farm in Pahang, known for Mao Shan Wang, D24, and Tekka cultivars, as well as its family farms in Johor Bahru.

99 Old Trees

The new spacious corner shophouse on Teo Hong Road is complete with hand painted murals of the durian fruit both indoors and on the outdoor wall, complete with a small al fresco area that overlooks the evening “durian marketplace’” for the sale of fresh durians. Says Kelvin Tan, director (also known as ‘Chief Durian Officer’) of 99 Old Trees, “We’ve worked tirelessly to create the perfect durian haven for everyone to gather and celebrate the King of Fruits. With this relocation, we had to opportunity to fully transform our humble shop into a one-of-a-kind modern-day durian ‘orchard’ complete with lush botanical-inspired interiors that we know our fans will love!”

Inside 99 Old Trees

Being a corner location, expect a bright and airy interior thanks to floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows that welcome natural light, a high ceiling, and vibrant botanical design. Cement screed walls and counters match the cafe-style rattan furniture and upcycled tree trunk “seats”, complete with paintings of the brand’s adorable mascot, Stinky the Hedgehog

The Stinky brand specialises in quality, value-for-money durian homemade desserts made with excess durian pulp from Pahang’s durian season, all created by in-house pastry chefs Chiak and Guiling.

Stinky Bomb

A highlight is the recently launched Stinky Bomb ($1.80/piece; minimum five pieces), featuring luscious Mao Shan Wang flesh and light cream nestled within a delicately crisp golden choux au craquelin with butter-sugar crumbs.

Stinky Roll

Another new launch and menu mainstay is the Stinky Roll ($6.50 for a quarter piece, and $25 for a foot long), a beautifully light Swiss roll flanking fluffy Japanese sponge cake filled with fresh Mao Shan Wang flesh and French custard cream.

Stinky Chendul

Other popular favourites include the Stinky Bowl ($5.50, $7 with extra durian shot), a hearty bowl of homemade durian mousse made with D24 durian puree; Stinky Chendul ($3); a traditional Teochew-style chendul topped with a generous helping of durian flesh (extra $2); and Stinky Scoop ($28 per pint); a decadent treat made with a whopping 15 “hoots” or “seeds” of Mao Shan Wang (that’s equivalent to two medium Mao Shan Wang durians’ worth of flesh).

Stinky Bowl

From now until 28 February 2022, receive a complimentary extra shot of durian with every order of the Stinky Bowl when you follow 99 Old Trees and Stinky on Instagram.
