Riesling maverick

It would not be an exaggeration to say that any wine lover worth his salt have heard of the name ‘Egon Muller’, owner of the family-owned Scharzhof Estate. International wine critics, sommeliers and enthusiasts have consistently heaped praise on the wines from the winery from the Saar area of the Mosel region in Germany, from the basic ‘Scharzhof’ wine to the iconic Goldkapsel collectibles.

At the annual Mosel auction (which was part of the VDP’s 100th year anniversary) last year, the Scharzhofberger Riesling auslese goldkapsel 2009, Egon Müller fetched a jaw-dropping 570.49 euros per bottle – the highest priced wine for the entire region. “It has to be Egon’s wines, he’s in a different league altogether,” a Mosel producer secretly confessed.
