Fan-favourite The Coconut Club is back with a bigger space and expanded menu. The restaurant has found a home in a three-storey conservation shophouse along Beach Road, purposefully redesigned to cater to small and large groups.
The first floor is a bright and airy main dining room housing a large communal table while upstairs is an open-concept space where groups can have an authentic sit-down, family-style nasi lemak experience. Tropical vibes permeate throughout. Diners are surrounded by elements of classic Singapore interiors such as rattan and terrazzo, as well as a charcoal mural by local artist Aeropalmics along the walls.
Start the day with updated breakfast classics like Charcoal-grilled Kaya Toast, with lashings of housemade kaya and cold, salted French butter, or Malay and Nonya Kuehs which are made fresh daily.
But it is the nasi lemak (what else?) that’s the highlight here. Available through lunch and dinner, spicy and textural dishes are served alongside fluffy coconut rice. From starters to sharing plates, the menu is now bigger and better. Begin with options like Gohu Ikan (a raw tuna salad that is commonly found in East Indonesia), and Kerabu Udang Kacang Botol (salad with prawns, shredded chicken, wing beans, sakura ebi and more). There are also local faves like Sate Ayam Bumbu Kacang, Gado Gado and Homemade Otah.
As for mains, be spoilt with generous plates of meat, seafood and vegetables. We highly recommend the Iga Bakar, a charcoal-grilled twice-cooked Australian beef short rib served with freshly pounded sambal hijau and sambal balado; Percik Kambing, melt-in-your-mouth lamb short ribs marinated in coconut milk and tamarind; and Sambal Mushrooms, stir-fried in signature sambal belachan and topped with a soft boiled egg.
Remember to pace yourself (don’t go overboard with the free-flow rice), because there is also a selection of traditional and modern sweets such as Pandan Sago Gula Melaka and Chendol. Try the Coconut Sorbet, a collaboration with local gelato makers, Birds of Paradise.
The new cocktail programme is another highlight, featuring a selection of classic cocktails with a tropical twist. The Coconut Club Mai Tai is a shaken blend of pandan, Plantation 3 Star rum, Plantation original dark rum, coconut milk, lime, and lemon juice; while the Pineapple Old Fashioned is a sweet-smoky tipple with Scotch whisky, Laphroaig 10, pineapple skin syrup and finished with fresh coconut water. If you are doing a dry month or want to cool down from the heat, the Coconut Shake or Coconut Milk Cold Brew are the perfect options.
